If you’ve noticed your spider refusing food, hiding away, acting lethargic, or behaving differently than usual, they may be preparing to molt. While this process can look concerning, it is completely natural and essential for growth.

Jumping spider molting is a natural process, but it can be confusing if you’re not sure what to expect.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about jumping spider molting, including signs, timeline, and how to care for your spider during this delicate process 💜

Molting is the process where a jumping spider sheds its old exoskeleton to grow.

Because spiders have a hard outer shell, they can’t grow gradually like other animals. Instead, they must periodically shed their exoskeleton and emerge with a new, larger one ✨

Each molt allows your spider to:
• grow in size
• develop more defined colors and patterns 🎨
• continue progressing through life stages (instars)


✨ Signs Your Jumping Spider Is About to Molt

Before molting (premolt), your spider will usually show clear behavioral changes.

Common signs include:
• refusing food or reduced appetite
• spending more time in their hammock 🕸️
• becoming less active
• sealing themselves inside their web

Some spiders may stay hidden for several days or even weeks before molting.


⏳ How Long Does Molting Take?

The molting process happens in stages:

Premolt:

This stage can last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. The older the spider is, the longer the pre-molt periods usually are. Once jumping spiders reach maturity, they won't molt anymore.

Molting:

The actual molt usually happens relatively quickly, often within a few minutes to a couple of hours.

Post-molt:

After molting, your spider’s new exoskeleton is soft and fragile. This stage typically lasts 24–48 hours (or a few days in older instars) while the exoskeleton hardens.


💡 What to Do During Molting

Molting is a very delicate time, and your spider is vulnerable 🕷️✨

Here’s how to care for them safely:

• do not feed or disturb your spider
• maintain proper humidity (around 80%) 💧
• avoid handling completely
• keep their environment calm and stable

The best thing you can do is ensure that they have proper temperature and humidity, leave them undisturbed and let the process happen naturally.


⚠️ What NOT to Do

Even small mistakes during molting can be dangerous.

Avoid:
• offering food
• opening or disturbing the enclosure unnecessarily
• handling your spider
• letting humidity drop too low


🐛 When to Feed After Molting

After your spider molts, it’s important to wait before feeding.

Only offer food after at least 48 hours after molting and only once they have left their hammock. This often means that they're ready to eat again.

Feeding too early can injure your spider because their fangs and exoskeleton are still soft.


🕷️ How Often Do Jumping Spiders Molt?

Molting frequency depends on age and can also vary between individuals. If a spider is fed more frequently, it may grow faster and molt more often; however, this may also shorten its lifespan.

Young spiders may molt every few weeks, while older spiders molt less often.


💜 What If Something Goes Wrong?

Molting is a very delicate process where many changes occur both internally and externally, and in some cases, complications can arise (known as a mismolt).

Signs of trouble include:
• difficulty exiting the old exoskeleton or becoming stuck mid-molt
• partially attached molts
• loss of legs

If you notice any of these, the next steps will depend on the specific situation. Here’s what to do in each case:

If this happens, you may not notice unless they come out of their hammock. If they do emerge and appear stuck, you can try gently increasing humidity by lightly misting near them (not directly on them) and/or placing moist cotton or sphagnum moss nearby.

This may help, but intervention at this stage is very risky.

• Partially attached molts
(for example, when the molt is fully shed but remains stuck to a leg or other body part)

Start by increasing humidity as described above. Make sure they have access to a slightly textured or “rough” surface they can use to rub against if they attempt to remove it themselves.

If the molt remains attached, you can very gently try to assist using a moist cotton swab. Never pull on the molt, as this can be fatal. This type of intervention should only be considered if they are unable to resolve it on their own and is done at your own risk.

You can also offer water or sugar water on a cotton swab to help keep them hydrated.

• Loss of legs

Jumping spiders can lose legs during a difficult molt. If the spider is not yet mature, they are often able to regrow the limb or limbs over future molts. If they are already mature, the legs will not regrow.

Many spiders adapt remarkably well and can continue to hunt, explore, and live full, normal lives even with missing legs 🕸️✨

In some cases, even when everything is done right, a spider may unfortunately not survive the molt. If proper care and conditions were provided, there is usually nothing that could have been done differently, and this is a natural, though difficult, outcome during the molting process 💜
