The Regal jumping spider (Phidippus regius) is a species found across a wide geographic range, including the southeastern United States—especially Florida—as well as the Bahamas, Cuba, and other Caribbean regions.
Because of this broad distribution, populations from different areas can sometimes show subtle differences in color, pattern, and size. These differences are what hobbyists refer to as jumping spider localities.
In the hobby, locality names such as Bahamas, Soroa, or Apalachicola are used to describe where a spider—or its lineage—originates.
🌎 Natural Variation Across Regions
Across its range, Phidippus regius shows a remarkable amount of natural variation. Females alone can display a wide spectrum of colors, including tan, gray, orange, white, and even combinations of multiple tones.
Some hobbyists and breeders have observed general trends associated with certain regions. For example, females from the Apalachicola region in Florida are often described as being slightly larger and darker, while males frequently show distinct white bands on the head. Females associated with the Soroa locality, which traces back to populations in Cuba, are often noted for more vibrant coloration, with many individuals displaying bright oranges, reds, or warm tones.
Spiders from the Bahamas may include lighter-colored individuals, including light or white specimens, but they can also display the same range of colors seen in other Phidippus regius populations, such as peach, tan, or orange.
Many hobbyists have observed that some of the whitest Phidippus regius tend to come from northern Florida populations, while spiders from southern Florida are often more brightly colored, frequently showing strong orange tones.
🎨 Why Color Variation Happens
The incredible diversity in jumping spider colors is not fully understood, but research suggests that coloration in jumping spiders is influenced by a combination of genetics, environment, and possibly even sexual selection.
Jumping spiders rely heavily on vision and are capable of distinguishing colors and patterns, which likely plays a role in communication and mate choice.
Because of this, color variation is not tied strictly to geography. Instead, it can shift over generations and may be influenced by selective breeding in captivity as well as natural variation in wild populations.
🌿 Why Localities Are Not Guarantees
When acquiring a Regal jumping spider linked to a locality name, there’s an expectation for the spider to display these traits. However, these distinctive variations are not always consistent, even in offspring of the same parents, and do not appear in every specimen from that region. What that tells us is that localities cannot be determined based solely on visual appearance and that we cannot expect for a jumping spider to look a certain way simply because of its locality of origin or lineage.
A spider described as originating from the "Bahamas" will not necessarily be white or pale, just as a “Soroa” spider may not always display bright orange tones. Appearance alone cannot reliably determine a spider’s origin, and locality names should be viewed as descriptive rather than definitive.
Even within the same egg sac, spiders can vary dramatically in color and pattern, and offspring do not always resemble what might be expected based on locality alone.
🧬 Hybrids Based on Locality
One of the most common misconceptions in the hobby is the idea that mixing localities creates hybrids.
In reality, locality names like Apalachicola, Bahamas, and Soroa do not represent different species or subspecies. They all belong to the same species: Phidippus regius.
Because of this, pairing spiders from different localities does not produce hybrids.
